Thursday, May, 17 Sidney to Poet’s Cove Marina 11.5 miles 2 hours



Before we left Sidney I called Poet’s Cove Spa to schedule a massage.  I am scheduled for 11 am on the 18th.  We took our time crossing Sidney Channel to Poet’s Cove Marina on South Pender Island.  They were having a come-on that you could stay three nights but only pay for two.  The dock hand knew nothing about the special.  Fred went up to the resort to work it out.  Apparently the special is for the hotel only but she decided to honor it.  The docks are pretty pathetic but they do have water and power.   The resort is lovely.  It was so windy when we arrived that we had two dock hands catching lines but the wind was pushing us off the dock.  Eventually we got secured and could rest.  When we went for a walk on the dock we saw the sailboat Mariah.  We traveled with the previous owners, Doug & Carol Hansen, in 2005.  That was our first year cruising the Inside Passage and together with Mariah and Golden Dawn (Bob & Cathy Irzyk) we circumnavigated Vancouver Island.  That was quite an adventure.  We were not able to connect with the current owners unfortunately.

Monday, June 5 Khutze Inlet

The weather remains dreary but Khutze remains spectacular.   We started the morning with a trap full of Dungeness crab.   They were all males (you have the throw the females back in) and they were all of legal size.   We kept our share and gave three to a fellow on a neighboring sailboat.     The rest were given a reprieve and thrown back in.   Fred cleaned them and we cooked them on a portable propane stove in the cockpit.   We let them cool and picked them right away.   What we didn’t have for dinner, I used my Seal-a-meal to vacuum pack a few pounds of crab for another day. Emerald Star launched

Emerald Star was splashed 3 days ago. We were fueled on the hard at North Harbor Diesel. We are able to stay on their guest dock until Monday (tomorrow). Of course things never run smoothly at first. Fred pulled the shower sump to clean it. It worked fine until he replaced it.  Now the pump runs but it does not pump out water. Off to West Marine to buy a new pump. Of course the new pump is taller than the old one and the lid to the sump box won't close properly. The hole that contains the sump is about 12" x 14". Fred has to stand on his head to work on this. He said a pretty fair amount of #%€¥? language.  On Thursday night (first night on the boat) we were getting ready to shower and the water pump was only working intermittently.  Our electrician, Brent from WavePointMarine, put a new water pump on his account for us.  So Friday Fred replaced the water pump. Sunday, May 28 Octopus Islands to Port McNeill 89.7 miles 8 hours

We left our anchorage at 6 am to pass through Okisollo Channel at high water slack.   There was very mild turbulence and our trip to Discovery Channel was smooth.   We had a number of possible anchorages planned if the wind or tide turned against us.   As we rounded Chatham Point and turned into Johnstone Strait the wind remained calm and we had a 2kt current with us.   We passed seals out to get some rest.   We just kept going.   Johnstone Strait is another body of water that can knock to @#$% out of you.   We were amazed and grateful.   We passed Port Neville and then Port Harvey.   Near Alert Bay we were joined by 6 or 7 Dall Porpoises that played in our bow wake.   What a joy!   These are very beautiful animals.   They look like a dolphin sized Orcas.   They have lovely black and white coloring.   By the time we reached the North Harbour Marina in Port McNeill the wind had picked up to 10-15 kts that were ...
